Workshops

Tropicana’s RA Selection Workshops span 5 weeks, with different workshop activities and goals each week. There are two workshops offered each week, and you should plan to attend the same workshop each week – that is, if you select Workshop A on Tuesdays, you should plan to attend Workshop A each week. Take a look at the workshop outline on the Workshop Info page!

About You

Tell us about your current student status. You are required to be a full-time student at SBCC or UCSB to be an RA at Tropicana.

Week 1 – Info Session

The first workshop is primarily an information session for you to hear from our current team about “the good, the bad, and the ugly.” It is certainly true that the RA job has some difficult challenges, but we strongly believe the rewarding experiences outweigh the tough moments by a significant degree! You will be able to ask questions and get real answers from students who are currently working as RAs at Tropicana!

Weeks 2-4 – Workshops/Activities

After the initial informative week, we dive into workshop activities including puzzles, thought exercises, art projects, personality discussions, and even physical activities to allow our team to get to know you, and you to get to know other participants in the workshops. After all, if you are hired, you’ll be working with some of the other candidates for a year!

Week 5 – Round Robin Interviews

The final week of workshops will be a round robin interview with, where you’ll have approximately 10 minutes to meet in a 3:1 setting with the Executive Director, Director of Residence Life, and all other Tropicana Directors. This is your last opportunity to showcase your portfolio, ask and answer questions, and give some final insights into why you feel you would be a great RA.

Selection Process

The RA role is an incredible experience (and resume) builder, and the challenges of the role may not be desirable for everyone. As the workshops progress, we may decline to continue with some participants if we feel they may not be a good fit for the RA role at Tropicana. Additionally, some students may self-select themselves out of the process if they learn that the RA role is not what they have in mind or desire. We certainly understand when students choose not to continue, even if we think they would be spectacular in the role, and we hope those students we choose not to move forward with understand that, while we sometimes wish we could hire everyone, we have a limited number of spaces for hiring.

Workshop Schedule

The workshops are held twice a week at the same time for each workshop.

  1. Workshop A – Wed, 4:30-6:30pm
  2. Workshop B – Thu, 6:00pm-8:00pm

Please make sure you can attend the same workshop each week. The full schedule is:
